Galoob Hand Carved Prototype
6.5 inches
1983 Galoob
This has got to be the holy grail of our combined Mr.T collection. I bought this around 1998 while working at a vintage pop culture store called “Populuxe” in Orlando, Fl. We took a lot of phone orders from ebay, and I would usually get into different conversations with the customers, and almost all of them would probably lead to Mr.T One gentleman told me that among other things, he collected prototype toys. Prototypes are basically what they sound like. They are made by artists for huge toy companies to be displayed in catalogs or trade shows before the actual toy is mass-produced. This gentleman told me that he recently purchased a collection of A-Team prototype toys from an artist who used to work for Galoob.
I somehow talked him into selling me just the Mr.T for $50. Crossing my fingers that he wasn’t ripping me off, I sent him the money. Needless to say, I was very pleased with what he sent me. A hand painted, hand carved Mr.T figure with removable doweled head. I’m guessing the head was made separately to show that the head would be able to move back and forth. The rest of the body is one piece. On the actual toy, the arms and legs move. The actual toy has darker skin and clothing tone. I have never seen another prototype for sale, or know if another even exists. This is a one of a kind piece of art and promotional piece. If you hear of any other thing like this out there, let us know!
